Als je naar Antwerpen gaat, moet je Koninck drinken en friet eten. Vind ik dan. En zorg dat je de friet niet patat noemt, anders krijg je aan de stok met de Belgen.

Ik ben 3 of 4 keer vaker naar Antwerpen geweest, 1 of 2 keer om te winkelen, 1 keer voor de bioscoop (Star Wars Episode 3) en 1 keer voor een opera (Richard Strauss' Salome). Wacht eens even, ik ben er ook nog 1 of 2 keer geweest voor theater, maar misschien was dat in combinatie met winkelen.

Deze keer zouden we met 7 mensen winkelen en 's avonds naar de bioscoop. Om 9 uur waren we verzameld in Wageningen en gingen we weg. Het was ongeveer anderhalf uur rijden en we kwamen voor 11 uur aan.

Gelukkig hadden we een kaart en een goede vrouwelijke kaartlezer (compliment) en hebben we alles kunnen vinden. Na wat navraag zelfs de Gandalf, een heel klein winkeltje met fantasy dingetjes en alternatieve kleding enzo. 's Middags hebben we in een cafétje wat gedronken/gegeten (ook al liepen we langs 2 goede frietkotten). We hebben vooral veel lol gehad, zie foto.

Een van de mooiere dingen van Antwerpen is natuurlijk de gigantische bioscoop. Ook al heb ik wel eens grotere schermen gezien, ze zijn in Metropolis nog steeds erg groot. Er zijn vooral veel zalen. Eén zaal was zelfs gereserveerd voor 'XL Gaming', waar je blijkbaar met een Playstation 3 op een gigantisch scherm kan spelen. Jammer dat het niet met een Xbox 360 kan, omdat daar veel betere games op zijn. Over Playstation gesproken, ze hadden in de hal spelcomputers staan, waaronder een PS3. Het grappige was dat het me niet op viel dat het een PS3 was i.p.v. een PS2. De graphics vielen tegen, de gameplay was gewoon ouderwets hetzelfde. Transformers was even leuk als de eerste keer dat ik hem zag en de anderen vond hem ook erg geslaagd. Ik vroeg me wel af of zulke dure films het nou waard zijn om gemaakt te worden. De robots zien er geweldig uit, vooral in slow-motion, maar zouden we niet bíjna evenveel genieten van een film die niet alle nieuwste special effects heeft en daarom maar de helft koste om te maken? Van mij mogen ze hoor, maar ik vraag me af of het nou goed verdient.

Na de film wouden we nog ergens friet halen, maar dat bleek moeilijk, dus hebben we maar bij een of andere Turkse pizzeria gegeten. Ook al was m'n pizza calzone erg lekker, ik was blij dat ik nog wat frietjes van Merijn kon meepikken. En nu hou ik op over die friet.

A soft bed, your own toilet and a shower that doesn't eat coins: yesterday I came back from my vacation in Germany!

I've had a lot of fun; the weather was good enough, the nature beautiful and the people very nice. I didn't finish Dune, I got halfway (300 out of 580 pages) and it's great so far.

In the next days I'll tell some funny vacation stories, probably all in Dutch.

It's good to be home again, it's just a shame that I need to work so hard on my thesis.

Vacation

Reading, swimming, walking and more relaxing stuff. It's that time of the year for me, the next two weeks. I haven't been on a proper vacation in almost 3 years, so I'm really looking forward to it!

I'm going to read Dune and perhaps another book and now I don't know what else to tell about it.

Latest movie seen: Transformers

If somebody would have told me there was a Transformers movie coming, I wouldn't have cared. I never saw the cartoons and I didn't play with the toys. But a few months ago I saw this awesome trailer in the cinema.... that turned out to be for Transformers.

After the trailer, I was expecting a huge assault of alien robots on Earth, with humans fighting back, helped by 'good guy' alien robots. It sounded like a nice concept and it looked like it was well executed.

I got what I expected and a bit more. I preferred the first half that had more story than robot-fighting, though my friend (an old-time Transformers-fan) preferred the second half because it had more classic Transformers action. The story was good (though nothing special), the action was nice and the acting was great. The actors didn't take themselves too serious and that really helped the movie. You kept being reminded how this was basicly a cool toy story for adults.

All in all it's a much better movie than the 2 other movies I recently saw in cinema: Spider-Man 3 and Pirates of the Caribbean 3.

Ik had het vanavond met m'n broer over de olie die steeds zeldzamer en dus duurder gaat worden. Toen we het over plastic hadden, begon he grappig te worden. ;-) Ik ben benieuwd of iemand onze humor kan begrijpen.

Oh ja, je moet twee dingen weten: Rintsje is een soort zwerver in Sneek, hij verzamelt allemaal troep uit containers en legt het dan in z'n huis en tuin. Een keer in de zoveel tijd komt de gemeente de boel dan opruimen en vervolgens sturen ze hem de rekening. Meneer Ekhart is een wethouder in Sneek, maar wij kennen hem van de tijd dat hij nog conrector was op onze middelbare school.

Zie maar wat je er mee kan:

Niels: heb je het ook over de peak oil in je scriptie? 8(

Stephan: ehm dat is?

Niels: dat is het punt waarna de olieproductie alleen maar af zal nemen dat kan elk moment aanbreken, als het nog niet geweest is

Niels: terwijl de olieverbruik alleen maar toeneemt, dat gaat een hele interessante tijd worden ;)

Stephan: oh zo.... ik las wel wat over kerosine, dat dat ook steeds zeldzamer wordt

Stephan: ja dat wordt echt lachen :D

Niels: maar wordt kerosine niet gekraakt uit olie?

Niels: of kun je alleen maar kortere ketens maken door kraken... hm

Niels: als wij slim zouden zijn zouden we onze aandelen in aardolie steken (iig slim in materieel opzicht)

Stephan: ehm.... aandelen in aardolie, bestaat dat?

Stephan: ik denk dat je hoogstens olie kan opkopen en bewaren

Niels: jazeker, dan bedoel ik niet in de aardolieproductie, maar je kan gewoon aardolie op papier kopen

Niels: dat wordt dan wel ergens opgeslagen, maar officieel is het van jou

Stephan: olie is geen bedrijf wat groeit ;) en dat zou alleen maar dom zijn, want olieboorders gaan minder werk krijgen en dus failliet

Stephan: ja op die manier

Niels: hm, interessant, zou plastic dan ook duur worden? :D

Stephan: zit er wel in

Niels: je kent die Rintsje wel toch? iig van horen zeggen?

Stephan: die met die bloempot die ik aan moest geven? :P

Niels: oh ja xD

Niels: maar goed, zo gek is die man niet eens dus, hij investeerd in plastic :-p

Stephan: rofl

Stephan: geweldig

Stephan: en de gemeente maar van hem stelen :-|

Niels: en hem er ook nog voor laten betalen :P

Niels: dit klinkt als het werk van de rode hond ^_^

Stephan: ^_^

Niels: meneer Ekhart heeft thuis een zwembad vol met oud plastic :D

Stephan: seriously?

Stephan: oh zo :D

Stephan: hij zwemt niet in geld maar in plastic

Niels: je zou er maar een filmpje over maken ;)

Stephan : hehe.... over een halve zwerver die plastic spaart.. iedereen verklaart hem voor gek...

Stephan : en dan 1 gemeenteraadslid die alles inpikt en zelf spaart ;;) genoeg materiaal voor een succesvol youtube filmpje

Niels: en dan eindigt het met zo'n shot van Ekhart in z'n zwembad vol rotzooi, in zo'n "drijvende" autoband in z'n zwembroek, dat hij zo'n bijna leeg pak openmaakt en er nog wat druppels uitzuigt :D

Stephan: haha geweldig :D

Spider-Man 3 (spoiler-free)

Tonight I saw S3, it was ok. Action is sweet, story/drama is bad. Spider-Man actually starts to be really annoying in this movie, up to the point where you think.... well, I don't know what to think. Something like "leave this movie please". But it was worth the ticket. Just don't expect too much from it.

We had more fun from beating up some kids who kept disturbing the movie by talking, making noise and throwing stuff. Nah, we didn't beat them up, but I think some might have if some cinema people hadn't made them clean the room.

Dolphin Dream

Tonight I woke from an amazing dream. Humanity discovered that dolphins had huge underwater cities, which they protected from human influence (that's why it took so long before we found out). I stood on a dock, from which you had a clear view straight into an abyss. Way down there you could see stone buildings with dolphins swimming around them. Some dolphins came to the surface to scare us away.

That's when I woke up. Even though I had already thought about this before years ago, I realised this might be the background of a nice story, so I wrote down the word dolph so I'd remember the dream this morning.

I find it fascinating to imagine that dolphins are way more advanced than we think and they have their own civilizations, comparable to ours. It's possible that they'd even understand our language, though they don't show it.

I wonder if anyone ever wrote a story on how dolphins now inhabit Atlantis. If I ever seriously start writing, this could be a nice base idea for a book.

Now that I think of it, I once had a awesome meeting with a dolphin. It was in the dolphinarium in Harderwijk, it was late in the afternoon and we were having something to eat in a restaurant. Right next to the terrace was a glass tank where the dolphins swam when they weren't performing. I was looking into the tank when a dolphin came swimming to the glass where I stood. It placed itself vertically so it was in line with myself, our bodies only 1 meter apart. We were looking at eachother. It lasted for at least 10 seconds and it made a huge impression on me. That's when I really started to like those animals. It was as if we understood eachother, as if he was aware of me as I was aware of him.

Sad how fast people are killing off these and other animals...

Snow!!!

Finally some sweet winter action!!!! A winter isn't complete without snow, don't you think?

There's supposed to fall 5-10 cms of snow here. At the moment we're only at... 1cm or so.

Edit1: Still snowing, I hope the supermarkets have enough chocolat milk.

Edit2: Back home again, they liked the hot chocolate milk I brought. A friend and me are going to build a snow man in a moment. Fun fun fun.

Edit3: The Snowman's done! It's huge, 2m20+. Pictures added hopefully soon.

Edit4: Behold! The first pics are in. Tomorrow I'll have some better ones with my friend and me on it as well. Oh yeah, it's a Snow wóman for a change.

Edit5: Argh it's smelting and it will fall over tomorrow.... :)
